Some of my younger classes have listened and discussed the technology in ancient Egypt and Greece. We had some great discussions on what technology is and how it has evolved. We talked about the technology that was created in ancient Egypt and Greece and how much of it is either used now or was used to create some of the technology we have today.
While there are more books in this series and I think it would be great to continue, I have had a couple homeroom teachers complain about the fact that I was reading to the students instead of letting them "play on the computer" so I am going to refrain from continuing on this path. Hopefully, though, we can continue to have such thought-provoking discussions. "Wait! We are not going to be using computers in Technology today"
"We're writing instead of typing?" "Why can't we just type the report?" The writing process is something that many students struggle with,. Sometimes it is due to a lack of understanding the process. Sometimes it is laziness because they do not want to be 'bothered' to hand write and edit before publishing their work. Either way, writing is a process and I believe that it is exceptionally important to remember that even when it means hand writing on lined paper while sitting smack dab in front of a computer. We have studied search engines and the proper way to search using keywords. We have looked at and chosen Technology-related careers. We have put those together and gathered information and research about those careers. Now it is time to hand write, self-edit, peer-edit, and revise before publishing the work on Word and printing it out. Writing is a process. Computers and technology is no reason to forget or ignore the process. All of the classes I teach have been learning and having discussions about what exactly technology is. It is NOT just computers, though many people call these classes 'Computer Class', it is SO much more than that. We've discussed electricity and batteries and the important role they play in how technology functions. We've also brainstormed numerous items that are considered technology and basic terms that we encounter when talking about technology. What do YOU think of when you think of technology? What technological items do you love? which do you loathe? Which ones do you think you could not live without?
